Tempting Top Tens: Fantasy lands

So far in the A-Z challenge I've covered temptations like chocolate, elegant things, and actors/actresses that tempt you to see them in their latest movies. Today's temptation, fantasy lands, is particularly dear to my heart. Maybe you've never been tempted by a wish to travel into a fictional or legendary world, but if you have, help me add to this list...

10. Never Never Land from Peter Pan. Pirates, mermaids, pixies, flying ships - childhood would have been so much plainer without this magical world.

9.  Dinotopia - novels by James Gurney. Sentient dinosaurs that work with humans. Need I say more?

8. Persia/Arabia of ancient myths - Sinbad, genies/jinns, flying carpets, Scheherazade, phoenix,  rocs, simurghs....

7. Camelot - I haven't met a spin-off of Arthurian legend yet that I didn't love. Names like Merlin, Excalibur, Lancelot, Pendragon - pure music to my ears.

6. Greece of ancient myths - heros, fickle gods and goddesses, krakens, chimeras, manticores, centaurs, Pegasus, satyrs, sirens....

5. Hogwarts and the the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Deluminators, wands, howlers, golden snitches, Marauder's Map, rememberalls, polyjuice, mythical monsters galore....

4. Earthsea - novels by Ursula LeGuin. A world of scattered islands, wise and deadly dragons, and wizards for every task

3. Damar - the Blue Sword and the Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. A land of living magic beset by armies of demons on one side, and a very proper Victorian-age British Empire on the other

2. Narnia - novels by C.S. Lewis. Full of talking animals, traditional legendary creatures and some delightful anachronisms like a streetlamp in a forest, beavers cooking dinners, swash-buckling mice and dancing trees.

1. Middle Earth – the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. I won't even start a list of names or things I loved, because I'll never stop. I used to be able to sing some of the songs and recite some Elvish verses by heart.

If you could get a ticket to any fantasy land, where would you go?

(Note: there will be a list later this month for Science Fiction - this one is for pure fantasy).

  1. Great list. Still haven't read the Earthsea books yet. Need to do that.

  2. Definitely Middle-Earth! Hogwarts, Earthsea, Camelot, Never-Never Land - all would be on my list. I'd add The Eye of the World lands, too. Now how do we get those tickets? :)

  3. I want my Hogwarts letter, of course!

  4. I LOVE Dinotopia! The illustrations are so beautiful, the premise awesome. But if I had a ticket, it would probably be Middle Earth.

  5. 1, 2, 5, 7 and 10 are my favorites. To this day, whenever I look at an especially clear night sky, one of my first thoughts it "second star to the right and straight on till morning." :)

Oh, and I second Marissa about adding WOT.

  6. All of your places are wonderful. I go to any of them if I could buy a ticket. Another place would be Dune. I want to ride one of those spice worms!

    Super post, Margo.

  8. Wheel of Time!
Before the lands got crispy, that is, and not the Empire.

  9. Greece of mythological times - oh, yeah! I'd love to go there (you know, if I could).
